Building a virtual college website

Hello everyone

Is there anyone out there who can advice on building a virtual college website. There are some off-the-shelf applications for distance-learning such as "blackboard", but I'm hoping to do something a bit different.

I'm looking to build a site with virtual learning, e-learning (inc Learning Management Systems) and social networking attributes. I've been advised to develop a functional specification to get reliable cost estimates, but I'm not sure I've been doing the right thing or the template to use.

Does anyone out there have any knowledge/advise they can give

Re: Building a virtual college website

The open source LMS that are widely used by the e-learning provider is Moodle. Moodle is an open source LMS engine. You can customize it as you like. There are so many features such as class management, instructor single sign on and many more. I suggest you to use it since it an open source for sure. No string attached. Just download it and start customize it as you like.

As rescuffles sugests; 'Moodle' is as good as you will get, I have used Moodle in the past and found it easy to use and build courses in.

CIPD and many universities use moodle - if its good enough for them?
